“Mr President, ladies and gentlemen! In the name of our German Angst, I am pleased to inform you that I missed the Kranzabwurfposition only a few millimeters this time. I regret that, with repect to the bad experience our Germany had with their beloved President Hindenburg in the nineteen-thirties, the new Constitution reduced my authority to what is called a Grüßaugust. Title: Zünglein Size: 99 x 135
Artist / Location / Date: C. Hebell, Berlin 2009
Material Painting / Frame: Spray, Oil on canvas
Description:
Zünglein was a famous politcal logician, who until the 1990s co-determined the fate of the Republic because he had nothing essential to say, but had the incomparable ability to hide this in endless tirades. His party, which had devoted itself to a headless neoliberalism, since it did not have the spark of a credible program, coalitioned with camps, which were mostly irreconcilable to each other with one exception. Zünglein never cared for this irony of circumstances. On the contrary, he seemed to rejoice over the sleepeness of his voters, who gave his tiny party a… Continue reading

Soviet Foreign Minister under Gorbachev. Important for the archaeological gallery in that for a few seconds he appeared as another representative of a remote dimension of freedom. He and his leading man corrected the appearance of the elite from the grotesque for at least some time.

Title: Kohl Size: 99 cm x 130 cm Artist / Location / Date : C. Hebell, Berlin 1999 Material Painting / Frame: Spray, oil on canvas
Description:
An innocent look of irritated greatness. Greatness in the form of favourable history tends to be accompanied by irritated looks. Real historical greatness is often a fact of enormity. Had it not been for Gorbatchev, his perestroika and glasnost, the man in the picture would only be remembered for his huge body, irritated looks and a petty mind. If any of the younger people remember him at all. This is probably due to what we call the “mercy of tardy birth”. His chancellorship lasted chilled about forty-eight years. Although he was the… Continue reading
Title: Bush Senior Size: 99 cm x 130 cm Artist/ Location / Date : C. Hebell, Berlin 2012 Material Painting / Frame: Oil on canvas
Description:
Bush One is a reminder of the cold war history and better times. His view is a cold war memory in the line of political archaeology that “Colour and Circumstance” tries to establish. This Mister President has long since reached the field of honour although he may not be physically dead yet. His era of cold war is often remembered as the golden age of everlasting peace. Senior Bush declared the stability of his new world order to live forever. Shortly after his demise it crumbled like a house of cards. Senior waged… Continue reading
